Classroom Presentations

Schedule a 45 minute to 1-hour class presentation aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core.

K-2nd grades: The water system and the people who build it- Students will help “build” a demonstration water system with pipes and see pictures of the people in their community who help bring water to their homes and school. Take home: Stickers and coloring books to follow up the lessons.

3rd grade: Drought tolerant plants, adapted for survival: Students examine drought-tolerant plant adaptations, rainfall patterns around the world and learn about saving water by planting native and drought-tolerant plants. Take home California Poppy seeds!

4th grade: California’s water- Make a California rainfall map and learn how water is collected and transported around the state through aqueducts. Brainstorm ideas on how to conserve water. Take home a shower timer.

5th grade: Our local water- 1.5-hour field trip to a local well. Most wells are within walking distance or a short drive from the school. Students learn about groundwater supplies and the waterworks. Take home an inflatable globe ball and Our Water Works in Santa Cruz County Activity Book about our Local Water Resources.

6th grade - 8th grade: Getting groundwater- Students pump water from the aquifer model to learn about groundwater, recharge, how the District pumps water, cleans it, and manages the supply. Take a field trip around the school to learn about the water system. The education trailer can be part of the water tour to learn more about advanced water treatment. Perfect for Earth Science classes.

High School presentations: Our local water supply and demand- 1-hour presentations on balancing water supply and demand in Santa Cruz County, planning for the future water needs, supplemental water supply, and conservation. Ask about our Advanced Water Purification educational mobile exhibit. Perfect for Global Issues, Environmental Studies, and Economic classes.

"I really enjoyed watching the children build the water system. We try to teach the children how their actions affect those around them so it was nice to see photos of the people who work hard at water systems, see how much work was involved and connect how we are being respectful of their work by saving water. They understand that saving water is important but the presentation made it human." ~1st grade teacher

K-6 Free Water Education Assemblies

The Soquel Creek Water District sponsors water education assemblies for schools in our service area (Soquel, Capitola, Aptos, and La Selva Beach). Each school can choose up to 3 FREE consecutive shows per school year. Assembly shows present lessons about water conservation, pollution prevention, watersheds, and the hydrologic cycle through their unique, crowd pleasing stage shows.

Banana Slug String Band is the featured performance group for the 2020-21 school year!  All shows this year are live via ZOOM due to COVID-19. Email Airy Larry to schedule a show.

Other groups that will be featured in the following years:

  • Banana Slug String Band performs the We All Live Downstream show that focuses on groundwater awareness, water use and conservation practices in all activities. The local “slugs” have been performing environmental songs worldwide for 30 years! The watershed songs will inspire and teach students small-step actions they can do (i.e. reducing water use by shorter showers, no running water for tooth brushing) while we make sure students have lots of fun while learning about water and watersheds!  Our local Slugs bring water awareness through costumes, audience participation, and humor. Call (888) 32-SLUGS or email to schedule a show.
  • Rock Steady Juggling, presents 'Go With the Flow!' This interactive and entertaining multi-media assembly uses juggling, comedy and magic to teach students about where drinking water comes from and ways to conserve water during the drought.  Book a show via their online form or by phone at 650-266-8286.
  • EarthCapades presents the H2O show. It's "environmental vaudeville" with humor, juggling, unicycle riding, magic, and stilt walking all backed with a colorful slide show about water. Students learn about water science, ecology, and practical steps students can take to conserve Planet Earth’s most precious natural resource, WATER! See Earthcapades website for their show details. Call (650) 557-4258 for available dates or contact them through their online contact form.
