Curtailment Fact Sheet

Green Gardeners network for irrigation and plant consultation

  • Water use curtailment: The Soquel Creek Water District requested that all customers reduce their water use by 15% during the dry season, May to October 2009. We are happy to report that we had an overall reduction of 13.3%. The groundwater basins that supply water to our area still remain in overdraft, and seawater intrusion continues to be a threat throughout the District’s service area. Please continue to use water wisely.

Follow the practices below to help reduce water use!

  • Practice water conservation and minimize or discontinue water use for non-essential purposes.
  • Water landscape before 10 am and after 5pm to reduce loss to evaporation.
  • Limit irrigation of landscaped areas.
  • No indiscriminate running of water or washing with water which is wasteful.
  • Do not wash exterior surfaces without the use of a positive, shut-off nozzle on the hose or when a broom or some other waterless device will suffice.
  • Do not allow plumbing leaks or malfunctions to go un-repaired for more than 24 hours after being discovered.
  • Do not operate fountains or automated carwashes that do not recycle the water.
  • Restaurants should only serve water upon request.
  • Hotels and motels should give guests the choice to reuse towels and linens to reduce water use for laundry.
  • Do not water landscape to an extent which allows excess water to run off the area being watered.

If there is excessive waste, users may be assessed a re-establishment fee after 2 consecutive violation letters are issued according to resolution #06-08.

If reduction goals are not met, mandatory 30% water use curtailment will be considered.
