educational programs and materials to schools and parents in the

all teachers:
May is “Water
Awareness Month” in
California
. Here are some FREE water education resources and ideas from
the Soquel Creek Water District to help mark the theme in your
classroom.
S
Water
education activity booklets: Request
a set of water education activity booklets to do in class or
give as a home activity (grade specific booklets available for
all grade levels, including the new Our
Water Works in Santa Cruz County for 5th and 6th
grades). A free water conservation
poster is also available to put up during your lessons.
S
Stickers
or pencils: Need water
conservation rewards to put a finale on a water lesson?
Colorful stickers with water-wise messages are available for
lower elementary and pencils for upper elementary classes.
S
Water
conservation poster contest: Encourage
4th and 5th grade students to enter a
drawing in the annual water conservation poster contest by May
20th. Student
art will be on display June through August at Soquel Creek
Water District.

Water
education videos: Borrow a
water education video to show in class. Classroom appropriate
videos available for most grade levels (most are 10-30 minutes
in length). Call for recommendations: 475-8500 ext. 142

Classroom presentations: Schedule a 45 minute to 1 hour class
presentation.

K-2nd
grades: The water system and the people who build it: Students
will help “build” a demonstration water system with pvc
pipe and see pictures of the people in their community who
help bring water to their homes and school.
o
3rd
grade: Drought tolerant plants, adapted for survival: Students examine drought tolerant plant adaptations, rainfall patterns
and learn about saving water by planting native and drought
tolerant plants.
o
4th grade:
California
’s water: Make a
California
rainfall map and learn how water is collected and transported
around the state. Brainstorm ideas on how to conserve water.
Each student will receive a toothpaste winder.
o
4th
grade: The Art of Water Conservation: 6- 1 hour lessons. Learn
about watersheds, watercolor painting, poetry and conservation
with spectra artist and river of words teacher, Lynn Guenther.
o
5th
grade: Our local water:
Two-part presentation (1 hour and a 2 hour field trip),
Students will draw a “waterscape”, review the water cycle
words and learn where our local water supplies come from. The
next class is a walk or short drive to a local well site to
learn about groundwater supplies and the waterworks. Each
student will receive a globe ball.
o
6th grade and Middle School:
Getting groundwater or Water-wise Math:
Students pump water from the aquifer model to learn about
groundwater and how we get it and clean it. Perfect for Earth
Science classes. Or learn how to calculate flow and volume to
understand how to use less water.
o
High School presentations: Our local water
supply and demand:
1 hour presentation
on balancing water supplies and demand in
Santa Cruz
County
. Perfect for Global Issues and Economic classes.
