Register Now for the Water Awareness Poster Contest

May is Water Awareness Month! The Soquel Creek Water District needs everyone in our community to save water. Engage your student or child in thinking about ways to save water by having them draw a poster about how they save water, or how they avoid wasting water. The “How I Save Water” poster contest is open to 4th and 5th grade students in the Soquel Creek Water District. Print out the instructions and registration sheet to get started and turn in an original drawing by June 7th.

Soquel Creek Water District Declares Water Shortage

Soquel, California [April 25, 2012] – Due to low rainfall this year, the Soquel Creek Water District has declared a “Stage One Water Shortage Alert”. The District is asking customers to reduce water use an additional five percent or more during the dry months, May through October, by restricting outdoor irrigation and eliminating water waste. The Soquel Creek Water District relies solely on groundwater, pumped with wells from underground aquifers, to provide water to its 38,000 customers from Capitola to La Selva Beach.

AT&T Phone Listing for SqCWD is Being Corrected

Several customers have noted that the phone number listed for Soquel Creek Water District in the AT&T phone book, both hard bound and online, is not correct.  Our correct phone number is 831-475-8500 and can be found on the left hand margin of almost any page on our website.  We are working with AT&T to correct the Yellow Page listing and appreciate the feedback from customers who brought the discrepancy to our attention.

Hunger Fighter of the Year Award

 Each year, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County recognizes two outstanding individuals who are dedicated to ending hunger and malnutrition by educating and involving the community. This year the committee selected Michelle Boisen from Soquel Creek Water District and Robert Montague from Pajaro Valley Loaves & Fishes as the 2012 Hunger Fighters of the Year.

New Water Rates Take Effect on January 1, 2012

In November 2009, Soquel Creek Water District adopted a 3-year rate plan for water service in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  The 2012 water rates are now in effect for all water consumed after January 1, 2012.  Customers will see these rates reflected on their billing statements beginning in March.  Click here for more details on the 2012 rates.

Winning With Water Conservation

During Water Awareness month, over 60 students from several schools in the Soquel Creek Water District created colorful posters to promote water conservation and submitted their art for the How I Save Water Poster Contest. While all of the posters and their messages were winners, three posters were chosen for standing out artistically and for conveying a clever message about conserving water.

Applications are now available for a Water Education Promotion Mini-Grant from the Soquel Creek Water District. Soquel Creek Water District aims to promote water awareness education in the community.

Crank Calls about Pink Eye in Tap Water

It has come to our attention that a man representing himself as a Soquel Creek Water District employee has called District customers asserting that their tap water is contaminated with the pink eye virus. This is a hoax. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a District employee and you have concerns about the validity of the call, please contact the District at 831-475-8500.

Conserving water provides multiple benefits, including one that is often overlooked: It can help lower your sewer/wastewater bill, and spring is the time of year to see if you qualify for a reduced sewer rate.

2011 Water Conservation Poster Contest Underway

In recognition of May as Water Awareness Month, the District holds an annual “How I Conserve Water” poster contest for 4th and 5th grade students in Soquel Creek Water District. Entrants are asked to create a colorful drawing and slogan that explains why water is so important and how we can conserve it. The posters help promote water conservation awareness both for the artists and the people who see the art on display. Student posters for the 2011 contest are due by May 6, 2011. Awards for the winning entries will be presented at our board meeting on May 17, 2011.

On February 22, 2011, the Soquel Creek Water District (SqCWD) Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve Resolution Number 11-07 certifying the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Well Master Plan (WMP) Project. The Responses to Comments Document published on February 9, 2011, in combination with the Draft EIR published on September 1, 2010, constitute the Final EIR for the WMP project.

Ever wondered how water agencies know if they will have enough water to serve their communities in the future? Well, one of the ways to help plan for sufficient future water supplies is through the preparation of a document called the Urban Water Management Plan.

The holiday rush is upon us and with it the gift-giving season. Most of us like the idea of giving gifts, but sometimes buying presents especially for adults can conflict with that feeling of not wanting to add to the materialism of the world. Then there's the problem of selecting a gift that is meaningful and useful. Most of us have received a gift that finds its way to the top closet shelf for a few years, then becomes a garage sale item or is re-gifted.

Soquel Creek Water District’s Board of Directors approved the Water Waste Prohibition Ordinance at the public meeting on December 7, 2010.  The Ordinance became effective December 8, 2010.

 

When rain falls onto roofs, thousands of gallons of water surge through downspouts, down streets and storm drains, and into the ocean. Then, during the summer and fall, people pay thousands of dollars to buy gallon after gallon of water to irrigate their lawns and landscapes.

Some innovative Santa Cruz residents are harvesting that rainwater and making it pay in more ways than one.

 A Notice of Preparation/Initial Study for the proposed scwd2 Regional Seawater Desalination Project was issued on November 15.  To view the Public Notice mailer,

The Scotts Valley, city of Santa Cruz, Soquel Creek, and city of Watsonville water agencies all offer various forms of free home and business visits and consultations to help customers conserve water.

Community Meeting: Recycled Water

In Response to Economy, District Cuts Budget by Over 25%

In response to the current economic crisis and customer comments during last November’s public hearing about rates, the District’s Board of Directors has approved reductions to the current fiscal year budget totaling $5.3 million. Both operating costs and capital improvement expenditures for the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, 2010, were scrutinized and reduced.
